Miniatur Wunderland

Yes, I would travel to Hamburg, Germany, just to see this incredible train station/airport/town miniature/diorama.

Started in December, 2000 with a planned completion in 2020, this incredible miniature display consists of:
12,378 square feet (24,757 square feet is anticipated for the completed display)
890 trains
300,000 lights
215,000 trees
200,000 human figurines
Awesome.

Guild Wars 2 Beta

ArenaNet founder and President Mike O'Brien announced yesterday that: (1) their first beta test is now closed, (2) press will be invited to beta test starting February, (3) a public beta test will be underway in March and April, and (4) the game is slated for release "later this year."  I barely have time these days for MMOs but Guild Wars has always one that is a bit easier to fit into my schedule - especially since it doesn't have a monthly subscription, a plan which ArenaNet will continue with the sequel.

NICE!

You Got Your Forgotten Realms In My Dungeons and Dragons Online!

Lots of Dungeons and Dragons news of late, eh?  The free to play online PC game Dungeons and Dragons Online has not had a true, full expansion in its six years.  Sure, there have been updates with new areas, dungeons, and such but not a large scale expansion.  Until now.  This new expansion will increase the level cap from 20 to 25 and, here's the big holy shit moment, will open up an entire new world outside of Eberron: the Forgotten Realms.  This is where D&D Online should have been initially set anyway, if you ask me.

Releasing this summer, D&D Online players will finally get the chance to delve into the Forgotten Realms setting with the release of the free Menace of the Underdark expansion.  This may very well get me back into playing D&D Online again.

First Edition Premium Original AD&D Books

Wizards of the Coast plans to do a limited reprinting of the old First Edition core books (Dungeon Master's Guide, Player's Handbook, and Monster Manual) an April 17th, 2012.  The prices for each book are pretty damned steep: the DMG will cost $44.95, the PHB and MM will each cost $34.95.  Now, before you immediately fire off an "aww, come on!  They're just trying to cash in on reprinting the old books" like I did, know this: it's for charity.  I have no idea what portion of your purchase will actually be donated, but Wizards states that the money "will help support the Gygax Memorial Fund."

HERE is the official release PDF.  These will be a limited press and the cover art will be all new.  The insides of each will be identical to the original 1st Edition AD&D release.

D&D 5th Edition

Think what you will of the Fourth (and current) Edition of Dungeons and Dragons' Fourth Edition, but it's getting an overhaul.  Publishers Wizards of the Coast have announced that work is well underway on printing a Fifth Edition (possibly releasing 2013) and this time they're trying to crowdsource some of the rules.  In other words, they've put out a call to the general public to discuss and share what they like and don't like about the current edition, what they've liked about editions in the past, what rules or mechanics you wish the game could have, et cetera.  Using a model not unlike what goes on with the publishing of video games, there will be open beta testing starting this Spring and an early playtest of the current set of 5th edition rules will be available at the D&D Experience January 26 - 29, 2012.  Interested in signing up for the open playtest this Spring?  CLICK HERE for the official information and sign-up page (scroll down for the button to sign up).

Star Wars: Uncut

In 2009, a call went out to the vast reaches of all of the Internets. A project called Star Wars Uncut was underway to cut up the first Star Wars movie (Episode IV: A New Hope) into 473 segments, 15 seconds in length each. Each user who signed on to assist with the project was to re-film their 15 second snippet however they saw fit. Once all of the segments were completed, they were voted upon and the segments with the highest votes were then collated into a final crowd sourced version A New Hope.

And here it is in all its beautiful glory. Yes, it's the entire movie. And yes, by the gods, it is really fucking awesome.

Playstation 4 and Next Xbox to be announced at E3 2012

This year's E3 is scheduled for June 5th - 7th, 2012.  There is some interwebz talk that Microsoft plans to reveal their next generation Xbox machine and Sony plans to reveal their next Playstation (PS4?) to the world at that time.  Microsoft may even make a formal announcement as soon as the next CES (Consumer Electronics Show) which starts January 10, 2012.  Then there's Nintendo who have already revealed their next gen console, the Wii U, but will undoubtedly showcase it and some games at E3 where Microsoft and Sony may only have projections, images, and samples.  Next Xbox and next Nintendo systems for Christmas of 2012 and the next Playstation for Fall, 2013?  It could happen.  Will they be called Xbox 720 and the PS4?
