Guild Wars 2 Beta Live This Weekend

The new Lion's Arch

ArenaNet sold out of all available pre-purchase digital copies of their standard and deluxe editions (LINKAGE here).  How does one sell out of digital copies?  It turns out that since each pre-purchase granted access to the Beta event this weekend, they had to limit how many copies could be sold by the maximum amount of possible players per server multiplied by the number of servers.  Current estimates put that at 48 servers' worth of players!  I have no idea how many players per server that allows, but... DAMN.  Could this be the game that balances the Free to Play models of D&D Online and Everquest with the monthly paid model of World of Warcraft?  Guild Wars 2 will have some microtransactions but not nearly as many as those Free to Play games but that's because most of that cost will be offset by the purchase price ($60 for the standard game) with the added bonus of no monthly charge.

ArenaNet announced that as soon as their server loads can be better balanced once final tallies of player numbers come in (most likely when the Open Beta event is over) they will relaunch the pre-purchase website.  I can't believe Guild Wars 2 has garnered this much attention and excitement - I love it!  I may have to rethink my "not playing any multi-player RPG anytime soon" stance.

Russian Laser Tank

Did you know that back in the 1970's and 1980's the Soviet Union was developing an actual, working tank that fired lasers instead of ballistic ordnance?  Per the Wikipedia entry for the 1K17 Szhatie, it was built on a Russian T-80 tank chassis with the turret replaced by a battery of artificial ruby focused laser cannons.  Yes, seriously.

New Trailer for G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation

This trailer already makes the sequel look better than the first movie.  I hope so.  That first one was so terrible that it made me punch my own balls out of anger.  GI Joe 2: Retaliation opens June 29, 2012

Final Fantasy's Cloud Strife: Then & Now

Seriously: what is this bizarre emo/screamo/scene trend with JRPG characters these days?  It's like the design staff meetings go something like this: "Add more buckles!"  "Add more sulk!"  "Add more black!

Add more turd is more like it.

It's no wonder why Western RPGs like Fallout and Skyrim are coming back into their own and kicking ass.

Hungry Hungry Hippos: The Movie

Not only is the premise for the board game based movie Battleship absolutely ridiculous... well... what else do I really have to say about it? However, if they made a movie based on Hungry, Hungry Hippos?  I'd be first in line for the midnight showing.

Zombie Ass

The Japanese come up with some weird shit, but I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be a parody on the Grindhouse genre.  Right?  At least I hope to hell this is parody.  Whatever it is, I want to see it.
