ArenaNet sold out of all available pre-purchase digital copies of their standard and deluxe editions (LINKAGE here). How does one sell out of digital copies? It turns out that since each pre-purchase granted access to the Beta event this weekend, they had to limit how many copies could be sold by the maximum amount of possible players per server multiplied by the number of servers. Current estimates put that at 48 servers' worth of players! I have no idea how many players per server that allows, but... DAMN. Could this be the game that balances the Free to Play models of D&D Online and Everquest with the monthly paid model of World of Warcraft? Guild Wars 2 will have some microtransactions but not nearly as many as those Free to Play games but that's because most of that cost will be offset by the purchase price ($60 for the standard game) with the added bonus of no monthly charge.
ArenaNet announced that as soon as their server loads can be better balanced once final tallies of player numbers come in (most likely when the Open Beta event is over) they will relaunch the pre-purchase website. I can't believe Guild Wars 2 has garnered this much attention and excitement - I love it! I may have to rethink my "not playing any multi-player RPG anytime soon" stance.
It really does look good. I don't have the hardware to play it, nor the gaming group. Hmm.
