Hero? Or Final Boss?

It's all a matter of perspective.  This reminds me of a great board game called Dungeon Run in which each player cooperatively works through a tile based, randomly generated dungeon to defeat the boss in order to obtain an item that turns the player who discovers it into the new final boss for the rest of the players to then focus on and defeat.
